The Department of Health and Kinesiology (HLKN) is the largest academic department at Texas A&M University and generates over 98,000 credit hours and 203,000 (Modified) weighted student credit hours each year. Students admitted to the program take 12 hours of 500-level coursework during the senior year. Students may begin the AMP after 90 or more hours have been earned, so this means they would normally apply to the Graduate School during the final semester of the junior year. Upon graduation, most students go on to complete graduate programs like occupational therapy, physical therapy, nutrition, nursing, or medical school. After the first year, students should seek advisement from the Public Health Advisor in the Department of Kinesiology prior to each semester and summer sessions. Students who are on departmental probation must meet with their academic advisor for future enrollment options. Academic advisors will help you plan your class schedule each semester. The assignment will be under the supervision of a Kinesiology department faculty member.

There are 13 graduate faculty members in the department. This pathway is recommended for students interested in pursuing graduate study in allied health-related programs, such as physical therapy or medicine. Upon completion of the PETE program students will need to complete an accredited credential program as well. The committee will meet prior to the internship meeting to discuss the appeals. Undergraduate students must complete 48 units of General Education as described in this Catalog, including 3 units of coursework meeting the Ethnic Studies (ES) graduation requirement. The emphasis also prepares students to pursue graduate programs in exercise science/kinesiology, physical therapy, medicine and physician assistant programs, occupational therapy, public health, and a variety of other programs that train health professionals. The undergraduate exercise science concentration in the Department of Kinesiology was one of the first to be accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP/COAES) and the graduate program in exercise physiology was the first nationally accredited program. The core courses provide a broad overall health and science preparation.

Although there is a common core syllabus, each School has its own style of teaching, incorporating training methods to enable people to become professional practitioners. The program incorporates many opportunities for professional certification through prestigious national organizations and governing bodies. The NIU College of Education embeds diverse, real-world learning opportunities in its programs, including Kinesiology. The Health and Physical Education Teaching emphasis prepares student to pursue a career as a school teacher. Kinesiology majors pursuing certification in physical education are typically interested in teaching as their main focus and, with successful completion, will graduate as highly qualified to teach in grades P-12. Students in Exercise Science are preparing for entry into professional programs such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, medicine or other competitive graduate programs. The Kinesiology emphasis combines exercise science fundamentals along with a signature experience in community based physical activity, fitness and wellness. The year-long Teacher Residency alongside the best Physical Education mentors keeps our Heath and Physical Education Grades K-12 majors in top shape, and our Health Promotion and Wellness students are out and about in the region participating in allied health rotations with local experts in the field.

To achieve this goal, the admission policy is designed to identify those students most likely to succeed in kinesiology education. The graduate of this program will then be certified to teach physical education in grades pre-kindergarten – 12. Prior to starting the practical teaching experience, a student must be accepted into the Teacher Certification Program. The student teaching will be performed in both elementary. While many majors require a practicum as a capstone, having an internship will give you a taste of the working world, while still having opportunities to learn and grow. While the mechanics of physical movement may be an interest, your professional pursuits might be more aligned with nutrition. You may major or minor in Kinesiology. LIMITATIONS on SOURCE & TIME for CREDIT ACQUISITION: In accordance with Policy 83-80.5, the Department of Kinesiology requires that a minimum of 24 credits of prescribed major Genesis Hyper Grip Large Rectangle Pads 20 Count coursework be completed at the location or in the college or program where the degree is earned. Students completing the concentration in Exercise Science must complete a minimum of 30 hours of electives from the following list. We offer undergraduate degrees in applied exercise physiology, basic exercise physiology, dance science and motor behavior, among many others.
