Our good friend Jack Hurley at Hurley Canoe in Dwight is happy to report that things are still going strong.

Hurley Canoe specializes in canoe restorations. So, it’s not a light canoe. One of the most popular choices for those enjoying Norfolk Broads holidays is the Supreme Light cruiser. Lots of adult children living here transitioned suddenly to having only one at home. Once you see them, you’ll want one for your home or office. This way you can go anywhere you want. It is light in weight and can be easily transported to various locations or placed inside a pickup van based on the model owned. J. Henry Rushton, of Canton, N. Y., made five light canoes for George Washington Sears. The Sairy Gamp was returned to Rushton, who sold many of the Nessmuk models after the Forest and Stream publicity. Rushton exhibited the canoe at the Forest and Stream offices in New York, an 1884 exhibition in New Orleans, and the 1893 Colombian Exhibition in Chicago, after which she was acquired by the Smithsonian Institution. It is a tough canoe but is not too heavy. A new section has been added to the Builder’s Notes dealing with repairs to the hull on your woodstrip canoe.

The most recent additions include a section detailing a very special removeable portage yoke system for the custom built solo canoe, and a section on repairing a damaged hull. Included are such topics as the secrets of the “Hidden Hardware System”, as can be seen in the seat photo above, and the “No Staple” method of strip building. Cast Members were seen training for the possible reopening of Davy Crockett’s Explorer Canoes at Disneyland Park. There is no way to meet that demand with composite canoes. This is a must-have for anyone thinking of designing their own canoe, or anyone who just wants an understanding of why different canoes perform the way they do. If you’re thinking about building one of our wood strip canoes, you might like to read the letter sent to us by Chuck Phelps of Pittsford, NY, telling us about “Rosie,” his Kipawa ‘stripper’!
