Luke Donald will become the first captain to lead Europe at successive Ryder Cups for 30 years after agreeing to take charge of the 2025 showdown in New York.
The Englishman was serenaded by a chant of ‘two more years’ by Rory McIlroy in the wake of the five-point demolition of the US in Rome in October and has now committed to the formidable task of retaining the trophy on foreign soil.
That could yet put him on a collision course with Tiger Woods, who has strong backing in the States to spearhead their recovery mission at Bethpage Black.
Woods was reluctant to discuss that possibility when asked on Tuesday, but Donald has cautiously welcomed the prospect of a rematch with the 15-time major champion, having famously beaten the American in the Saturday four-balls at Medinah in 2012 – the most recent occasion of an away win in the Cup.
Donald, bidding to become the first European captain to claim victory on both sides of the Atlantic since Tony Jacklin in 1987, and the first to be retained in the post since Bernard Gallacher in the mid-nineties, said: ‘The desire to win, whoever the (opposition) captain is, is strong. Obviously, Tiger’s been mentioned as a possible candidate and we’ll have to wait and see.

‘I’ve got to play a lot of times with Tiger in my career. I have great admiration for what he’s done in the game. You would think he was going to be a Ryder Cup captain at some point and if it’s this time, great, if it’s another time, great, but it’s not really my focus.’
Sources at Ryder Cup Europe made it clear immediately after the win in Italy that Donald was their overwhelming choice to return – they even circumvented their usual interview process to effectively hand Donald the job at a point when the pool of candidates was depleted by the defections of Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia to LIV.Â
Only Justin Rose seemed viable of current alternatives, but he wants to challenge for a spot on the team.
With Donald’s detail-centric approach having proved so successful in reversing Europe’s underdog status, it is hoped by Ryder Cup Europe that continuity will be key to neutralising what is sure to be a frenzied atmosphere in New York.
Donald added: ‘As Rory McIlroy said in Rome, the ultimate is to try to win away from home. I’ve done it twice as a player, but it’s not easy.
‘It’s the same every time you go away and New York might be a notch above that, but again, that’s to be seen. I’ve got 22 months to try to figure that out.’
