This question has been troubling me for some time now. I say troubling, not because I personally have any doubt that business and ethics can and should coexist for an organization to realize success. I say it because reality shows that, despite the truth that most corporations in the corporate world have their so-called “Code of Ethics,” just a couple of of these corporations truly go by it. Within the meantime, more and more corporations and people find excuses for his or her unethical behavior, and accordingly placing those who proceed to believe in ethics in a difficult situation, in which the latter group has to compete against those that are less principled. Unfortunately, ethical people usually lose of their combat against those, who would do anything to get what they want. As a matter of truth, in right this moment’s world, it has change into more the rule than the exception for ethical individuals to fail of their career and their enterprise life simply because they should compete with the more frequent type of people in at present’s marketplace, namely the unprincipled, or whom many favor to call “smart.”

Nearly day by day, we’re faced by situations in which now we have to make a choice and choose between something ethical and another that is less than ethical, with the latter, virtually always, showing because the more rewarding. Being hung up on profit and the urge to succeed most individuals sadly select the latter, in order to realize their immediate goals.

There are a lot of examples of unethical decisions which might be made within the enterprise world. Two examples come to mind. At the business level, I can think of situations in which a business takes a cutthroat approach to remove competing companies or individuals from their path, instead of getting into with them into an honest competition; At the individual level, I can think of a situation in which a greedy employee is focused by a competitor and is paid a bribe or a commission in return for confidential information that can help the competition snatch a enterprise opportunity from the employer. The sad part is that most people, nowadays, instead of condemning such a behavior, they describe it as a smart move, and add, “You cannot be a sheep amongst wolves.” They are saying it, as if joining the wolves is the only resolution to outlive in in the present day’s world.

I wonder! When did it turn into acceptable to be dishonest, crafty and downright villainous? Why are honest individuals considered naive, or more importantly why do they lose their probability of winning against the more crafty and less ethical? Who made this the number one rule of success? And, is a risk in opposition to the financial profitability of an organization or a person worth sacrificing one’s values and allowing his or her ethics to go out of the window?

In my book, it does not have to be this way. Good business ethics can and must be part of a successful business. Unethical companies could be profitable on the short run, but can never be really successful. A business without ethics is a business without integrity. Such a business would possibly realize rapid profitability however it will definitely face long run failure. This rule applies to each facet of our life. This is true, not only because shoppers like to deal with worth-based corporations, but additionally because an unprincipled business is like a rotted house destined to break down at the hands of its own in-grown termites. It simply doesn’t have a solid basis on which it can stand in the face of the many storms it will face in its lifetime.

So, what do you do to make ethics the thread that weaves the fabric of your organization?

1-Lead by example. Inspire your staff and purchasers to do what is right.

2-Encourage your staff to do the proper thing, and reward them for it.

three-Don’t tolerate corruption or unethical conduct in your company,

4-No matter how profitable a partnership or a business relationship may appear, do not take it if it implies that you workforce up with an unethical company or particular person,

5-Finally keep in mind that combating the nice battle to win the race is far more satisfying, regardless whether or not you win or lose, than profitable at the expense of somebody else.

Live and lead by example, for when all lately are behind you, and you’re sitting in your rocking chair telling your grandchildren tales about your achievements, you will not only feel proud to inform the story of your sincere life struggles, but you will even be teaching them tips on how to live an honest and righteous life. Only then, your brief journey in this world would have made a distinction, and your life wouldn’t have been in vain.
