Health authorities said Sunday would be critical in determining if the state would be forced into lockdown after a family of five in Brisbane also tested positive on Friday and Saturday.

The five new cases of the Delta variant are all members of the same family who live across two households, including a 13-year-old schoolgirl from Sunnybank.

Dr Young praised the girl’s mother who got her tested very quickly and thanked the more than 1,000 students and family members of the girl’s school Sir Thomas Moore College who are in lockdown.

‘We’re not out of the woods yet, but this is the best result we could have hoped for at this point in the outbreak,’ Deputy Premier Steven Miles said.

The family of five caught the virus after a group of three men travelled from NSW – two of which tested positive for Covid – and one stayed with the father from the family.

‘I’m now confident that’s where the virus came into Queensland,’ Dr Young said.

She said the men had been granted passes to cross Queensland’s closed border. However only one of the men – who was Covid-negative – was fully-vaccinated.

Health minister Yvette D’Ath said every health worker including cleaners, security and admin staff would need their ‘first dose by the end of this month, and to be fully vaccinated by the end of October’.
