Since 1891, when the first documented version of the game was held on the Rideau Canal outside Ottawa, Ontario, women have struggled to play the most popular sport in the country (McFarlane, 1994). Early beginnings of the game involved women of upper class standing who participated in the sport as a fundraising activity for local communities (Avery and Stevens, 1997). Only through the guise of serving a social good was women’s participation in hockey justified. This transformation can be illustrated through a comparison of the ethic, 먹튀폴리스 주소 (ted.com) goals, governance and control, and ideals which once endured within women’s hockey to those which have come to dominate within the game today. The remainder of this paper presents a critical reflection on the development of women’s hockey in Canada during the past decade. By the nature of its separateness, the female hockey community maintained an independent volunteer-based governance structure during much of the time the amateur sport system in Canada was transforming. They discovered that many of the women in the study criticized institutionalized sport as elitist, exclusive and hierarchical.

In their study of a feminist softball league, they examined how an alternative sport model contradicted many of the institutionalized forms and values of male sport. The past 35 years have characterized a period of ongoing institutional pressures from the Canadian state upon national and provincial sport organizations to rationalize, bureaucratize and professionalize (Macintosh and Whitson, 1990; Macintosh, Bedecki, and Franks, 1987). Conditional funding and quadrennial planning mandates not only changed the structure of sport organizations, but created a significant transformation in the values embraced within the amateur sport system. The procedures are so smooth and simple that one wonders how world and times have changed!
