A robot vacuum is the best tool to maintain the cleanliness of your home. It can remove pet hair, dust and other surface debris before it becomes a bigger problem.

Some robots sync with smart assistants such as Alexa and Google Assistant for a hands-free experience. Look for models that recharge and resume cleaning the area they left.

1. iRobot s8

This smart robot vacuum and mop combo is an excellent choice for many homes. It features a superb navigation system with GPS and laser sensors. It also has a lot of features and control options that can be accessed through the app. It also has a handy feature which allows you to create cleaning zones in areas that require extra attention, and Keep Out zones in areas where you do not want it to go. And, like all Roomba devices, it is updated with new software updates that make it more efficient over time.

It’s expensive, but it’s also among the most advanced robot vacuums that ZDNet has evaluated. It comes with a powerful battery that can vacuum all of your home in less than two hours. It also switches between mopping and vacuuming with the push of one button. And, unlike other self-emptying robots that require you to empty the bin after each run, it automatically emptys itself into the larger waste container that is above its charging dock.

It also comes with a variety of other features, such as intelligent obstacle avoidance which uses cameras and processor-powered smarts to recognize obstacles. It rarely gets derailed or stuck during a cleaning process and is also the most effective at avoiding power cables as well as other objects in my tests. It’s not as reliable in detecting pet waste or other hazards.

2. Eufy RoboVac Hybrid X8

Eufy is owned by Anker, has become an established brand in the world of low-cost robot vacuums. However, it did not provide the option of a model that could mop. That’s changed with the X8 Hybrid, which has an impressive set of modern features and is able to compete against more expensive models.

The laser navigation is the primary selling point of this machine. The X8 makes use of laser mapping technology that is more precise than the previous Eufy devices. It also takes significantly less time to create an accurate map of your living space and also stores multiple maps, which is ideal for homes with multiple floors.

The X8 is a great vacuum cleaner for floors that are clean. It is able to easily throw debris through the side brushes and into its 400ml dust bin. The X8’s tyres, despite having a circular shape, are efficient in grabbing corners and edges. Our tests showed that it could only remove 90% of the fur on hard floors.

There’s a basic mopping mode that uses the same water tank as the vacuuming one. While this is a good option for spills that are not too large, you can’t limit the amount of water it is using, which will limit its effectiveness on more severe stains. It does, however, do an admirable job of picking up pet hair, with a better pickup rate than the Roborock S7.

3. Miele RX2

Miele’s RX2 robotic vacuum is known for its quiet, powerful appliances. It is a stunning design, superb navigation, and excellent cleaning power. However, it does have some operational issues that prevent it from being ranked as the best overall smart robot vacuum.

The RX2 is equipped with a dual-sensor mapping system that uses a LIDAR to map the space, and a pair 3D scanning cameras for detecting and avoiding obstacles (such as furniture legs or pet waste). Once the room is mapped the app allows you to create virtual no-go zones as well as areas that you want to clean. will clean automatically. You can also start cleaning manually or change the cleaning mode, see a live feed from the onboard cameras and more on the main screen.

The RX2 is equipped with excellent sensors that can detect furniture and other obstructions instantly. Its sweeping and suction power are top of the line, picking up surface litter from carpets with medium piles and dust in bare floors. However, it’s not the most flexible robot available. Like many others it’s not a very good climber and is prone to problems with things like thresholds made of metal transition strips.

Some people buy robot vacuums because of the ease of setting up a schedule using an app, and then forgetting about them for weeks. It’s important that a robot is able to do the job, so our ZDNet staff has compared and reviewed some of the most popular models in order to help you select the best one for your home.

4. Shark ION

This budget robot looks like your typical robot but it’s an upgrade in performance and features. Its intelligent mapping system creates 3D and 2D maps of your home and uses those to navigate around obstacles and avoid them. It can even detect common obstacles like furniture legs and power cords in real-time. This combination of sensors along with a bump detector and an infrared sensor to keep the vacuum from stepping on steps makes it one our most flexible vacuums.

In our tests, it effortlessly climbed over thick shag rug and didn’t get stuck on them (like the RoboVac 11s or Roomba 690). Its navigation capabilities were impressive. Its composite score for carpet and bare flooring beats the competition and it was able to pick up 98.5 percent of the dirt and embedded dog hair from our lab test samples.

The controls are more basic than those of the competition’s. There’s a cleaning button at the top and you can start it with the app or via voice commands using Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also create a schedule for weekly or daily cleans, create no-go zones, and see its history of cleaning. Ion is covered in a smart dark gray plastic that feels and looks attractive in your home. The rear dust bin is accessible for emptying and removing the filter is just as simple.

5. Eufy 11S

If you’re looking to buy a basic, no-frills robot vacuum at a low cost, the Eufy11S could be a good choice. It lacks some of the smart features, like digital mapping and Alexa integration, which are available in more expensive models, but if you don’t need these functions, you can save money with this model.

The robot is easy to setup and use. It does not require smartphone application or Wi-Fi pairing. However, it does come with the remote control that lets you select between different modes and adjust suction level. It also lets you manually turn off the robovac for scheduled cleaning.

In our tests, the 11S was extremely efficient in removing dirt and pet hair from hard floors and carpets with low pile. Its slim profile allowed it to pass under furniture that is low-hanging and other items that some bulkier robots could not reach. It could also easily pass over doorway thresholds and move from one floor type to another.

Like other robots, the 11S will take in some objects such as cords, drawstrings for hoodies and cat toys. The manufacturer suggests that you prevent this from happening by keeping these items off the ground and using a cord organizer if possible. It also recommends cleaning the dustbin regularly replacing the filters, and washing or changing the brushes as required.

6. IRobot Roomba 980

The Roomba 980 is the flagship robot vacuum. It’s pricey, but it’s also the most powerful robot vacuum you can purchase. Its self-navigation feature and environmental mapping are a joy to behold. It is more sophisticated in its automation than the majority of its competitors, including the ability to set up virtual boundary markers using its mobile application. While its app is a little sluggish, and the 980 does spin a bit when moving over cables, it’s a highly efficient robot vacuum.

We really like the 980 because it uses its iAdapt2.0 navigation sensors and visual simultaneity mapping and localisation (or vSLAM) to remember your home’s floor Washing robot plan. It then uses the information to create a consistent and efficient cleaning path for every cycle. The result is cleaner floors and a more efficient vacuum than other high-end robot vacuums.

Other features of the 980 include dual multi-surface brushes that capture dirt from carpets and hard floors, as well as the spinning brush that sweeps debris into the robotic vacuum’s bin. Its floor tracking sensors help it navigate between furniture and around edges, while Cliff Detect prevents the Roomba from falling down the stairs. And it automatically returns to its base station for easy recharges between sessions. Although the 980’s battery lifespan and bin size aren’t quite as efficient as other robot vacuums, it’s a solid and reliable machine that will keep your floors spotless for hours and hours.
